Robert Herman has over 30 years of experience as a professional horticulturist, almost seven of which were spent in Europe as "Meister" for the Countess von Zeppelin Nursery in Germany. He served in the horticulture and education departments at the Missouri Botanical Garden and at White Flower Farm he was Director of Horticulture. From 1999-2007, he lead his own international consulting business, Uncommon Plants, specializing in perennials for gardens and green roofs.
Mr. Herman has taught at the University of Massachusetts and the Graduate Program in Landscape Design at Radcliffe College as well as the International Master of Landscape Architecture program at Anhalt University, in Germany. From 2007-2013, Robert was a full-time Horticulture Instructor at Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, CT. His articles have appeared in American Nurseryman, Greenscene, Fine Gardening , the Hardy Plant Society Journal in England and the German publications, Garten + Landschaft ,Garten Praxis and Blaetter Rauschen. In 2010, the American Horticultural Society honored Mr. Herman with their Teaching Award and he was bestowed with the Perennial Plant Association’s Academic Award. The Connecticut Horticultural Society conferred their 2018 Gustav Mehlquist Award "In recognition of outstanding contributions to horticulture benefiting gardeners in Connecticut and nationwide".
Robert is currently an independent garden/plant writer and is working on new selections of hardy perennial plants, primarily New England Asters.
